Great Personalities Of Haveri District

Gangubai Hangal:Hindustani classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal's voice still quivers as she remembers the lessons learnt in the past. Now 89 years old, the doyenne of the Kirana gharana is one of the senior-most performing artistes in the world today.
Born in 1913 in a family of musicians from Hangal (a small village in north Karnataka from where she gets her second name) her family shifted to Hubli where she has lived since 1928. Gangubai has received numerous awards in long and illustrious career, such as the State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962, the Padmabhushan in 1971, the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1973, the Dinanath Pratishthan Award in 1997, the Manik Ratna Award in 1998 and the Padmavibhushan in 2000.

Kanakdasa:No biographical details of Kanakadasa are available. Tradition makes him a member of shepherd (Kuruba) community who as chief (nayaka) of security forces under a local king. His family deity or the deity he worshipped was Adikeshava of Kaginele, presently in Haveri district. Kaginele, now a village, was a prosperous place and trading center in middle ages. Saint-Poet Kanakadasa (c 1509-1609 A.D.) belongs to the tradition of Haridasa literary movement which ushered in an era of devotional literature in Karnataka. Scores and scores of Haridasa have composed songs in praise of Krishna (incarnation of Vishnu). 'Haridasa' stands for 'servant of Hari', is another epithet of god Krishna

Sarvajna :(Kannada: ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞ, also transliterated as "Sarvajna"), was a poet in the Kannada language. He is famous for his pithy three-lined poems which we call them tripadis, a form of Vachanas. (Three-lined poems are called as tripadis).

The period of Sarvajna's life has not been determined accurately, and very little is known about him. Based on studies of his literary style and the references of later writers, historians estimate that he might have lived during the first half of the 17th century. Some references in his works indicate that his real name was Pushpadatta - Sarvajna appears to have been his penname.

The meening of Sarvajna is " Who knows everything! " Being a monk, he says how he became Sarvajna in one of his tripadi. He had written around 70707070 tripadi's. We can get this number from one of his tripadi. See below...

" Sarvajna-nembuvanu garvadind-adanvane
       Sarvarolagondu nudi-galitu vidyeya-
       parvatave aad noda Sarvajna "
